We had an interview with the guys from Main Concern about their career and their upcoming performance at Loudness on the 12th of November...
➤ What made you decide to stop with Main Concern?
Ever since we first started making music together we have always had the same philosophy. We wanted to make music that nobody else made. We wanted to take what the genre had to offer, flip it on its head, add influences from a wide variety of sources and pump out stuff unlike anything ever before.
We got noticed for our style and a wide range of opportunities opened up for us. We shared our music, we have played our music, and we became an influential name in the scene. Our goal was never to be big. We never imagined that we would ever get the chance to play at some of the festivals and parties that we have played at. We just wanted to contribute to the genre, mix things up a bit and hopefully influence other artists. We feel that we have achieved more than what we initially wanted with the ‘Main Concern’ project.
Next year, we will be on the opposite side of the planet from each other for a considerable amount of time. This fact left us feeling uncertain about what might happen with Main Concern. We realized that we had done more than we ever hoped with this project and didn't want to risk it slowly and quietly dying. We sat down and decided: ‘’Let's go public that this is our last year and go out with a bang!’’.
➤ What are the most memorable moments in your career?
There have been so many moments that we will forever cherish and be proud of. The two that come to our mind would be Decibel 2013 and again Decibel in 2015. As most people would agree on, meeting your heroes for the first time is always something you will remember forever.
When we arrived backstage at the Loudness stage at Decibel in 2013 we sat down with the stage manager, we were so nervous we were literally shaking and this must’ve been something he noticed. He went away to get a six pack of Heineken and brought Adaro to talk to us. Back home we had written a paper with what tracks we wanted to play, Adaro asked to see it and he said it looked cool and that we should try and let go of whatever was in our heads and just enjoy this amazing moment, it really helped a lot! To top it all off the stage manager brought us to see the stage, B-Front was playing and when he saw us he asked us to come up on stage with him. He was just about to play “Dikke Vette Bassplaat” and he told us to peak over the DJ-booth to see the crowd. This was just insane for us who had only played for a crowd of about 50 people before!
In 2015 we returned to Decibel and this time we weren’t alone, this time we had our good friends and our personal heroes Vazard & Delete with us. When we saw that b2s were planning to put us together on stage we couldn’t believe it was true. We had high expectations of this performance, not only on ourselves but what it would be like performing with Stewart & Ryan. In the end those 90 minutes on that stage were filled with so much emotions and adrenaline rushes it’s hard to explain!
➤ What will you never forget?
The love & support shown by our fans and the Hardstyle community as a whole. How people have been coming up to us during this last year with tears in their eyes telling us to not leave but that they respect our decision. We would have never thought that we could have that kind of impact on people. But also all the support we have gotten from organizations, especially b2s. From that first booking in 2013 til the last one now in November we’ve always felt a lot of help and appreciation from this organization. We can not express in words how much that means to us!
➤ What did Loudness mean to you?
As mentioned earlier, In 2013 we played at Decibel outdoor festival on the Loudness stage. This was our very first time as Main Concern in Holland, as well as our first encounter with the “Rawstyle” crowd in Holland. Since then the scene and Loudness itself has grown like crazy! We’ve had a lot of insane experiences with Loudness, two of the greatest ones must be closing down the mainstage in Maassilo in 2014 and closing down the Loudness stage on Decibel in 2015 with Vazard & Delete! This might sound a bit exaggerated but to us Loudness is more than just a party concept, since 2013 we’ve felt like we’ve been part of a family! It doesn’t matter if it’s in Maassilo, Klokgebouw or by the water at Beekse Bergen the feeling is the same; it’s 100% dedication from each and every one present. We’re extremely grateful to have been part of this journey and seeing the family grow each year!
➤ Which tracks will surely be played at your final Loudness?
We’ll have 3 finished remixes of some of our old tracks and hopefully some new tracks of our own to play. We’ll also make sure to spin some new bangers from the latest edition of the “Punch Patrol” album released on Spoontech Records. We’ll also go through some older tracks that to us is “Loudness classics”, we always love to mix up new with old!
➤ How do you guys see your future?
As of right now our future is very hard to tell, we’re both in this weird transition phase where we’re letting go of something that has been a huge part of our adult lives. It’s a scary feeling just as well as it’s really exciting, the next few years will probably be us experimenting a lot with different things to find out what sticks.
In the near future the first challenge for John will be to straight after the new year go to India and adjust to a life over there. Nick will remain in Europe next year, probably testing out producing other genres and styles of music, just keeping a low profile and focusing on important relationships in life.
➤ Is there any chance we can expect a comeback?
The Hardstyle scene means a lot to us, and even though the Main Concern project will be coming to an end it doesn’t necessarily mean that we personally will be gone from the scene for good. Whether or not Main Concern will ever make a comeback is something we will leave to be answered in the future!
